Katz: Art Videos

My Life Story:

life story website

This was my first attempt at making a video. It started with a linocut called "the Two of Us" which originated as a mailart piece. I loved the look of it, and wanted to take it further. I digitally expanded it into a series of eight pieces which gradually became this video. The videos are too large to copy onto this website, so please click on the link provided to see it on Vimeo.

Broken Baby:

In the 1980s, I went through a marriage breakup and a huge life crisis. I found a therapist to guide me through a harrowing time. At one point I said I was having difficulty articulating all the stuff going on in my head. She replied that words aren't my primary language, and suggested I go home and draw. Since I had always drawn fairly representationally, I had no clue what to draw. Soon - one day while I was writing a letter to my dad - a large, strange image emerged from my hand onto the page. I was stunned and fascinated. It seemed to me that this figure was a guide of sorts, who would lead me through some sort of internal process. Over the next few months, a series of 28 drawings appeared almost effortlessly, all with the same outline as the first. After that, I felt much better, though I couldn't articulate why that was.

Ten years later, I organized the drawings and added captions. Another dozen years or so went by before I knew how to present them to their best advantage. The result was this 10 minute video, called "Broken Baby".
