My early attempts at sculpting were carving wood. I graduated to stone, welded steel and casting metals later. Most of the miniature sculptures I do now are experiments. I use these pieces as maquettes, as sketches or models for larger work. The material can be a small casting, carved stone or wood and even small welded steel pieces.
